New Dutch Books in English

The last few months have seen a flurry of publications of Dutch literature in English. We are especially excited to see the publication of Grand Hotel Europa, Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer’s epic novel of European tourism, and We Had To Remove This Post, Hanna Bervoets’s fierce novella that plunges into the world of social media moderation. A notable event was the first English publication of Anton de Kom’s We Slaves of Suriname, almost ninety years after this scathing indictment of slavery. De Kom’s gripping and horrifying account is as important as ever.

In February the winner and runner-up of the biennial Vondel Prize for the best translation from Dutch into English were announced, David Doherty for his translation of Jaap Robben’s Summer Brother and David McKay for Slauerhoff’s Adrift in the Middle Kingdom respectively. Congratulations David and David!
