The shortlist for the Vondel Prize for translations from Dutch into English was recently announced, with the following books and translators contending:

The winner will be announced soon.

 

Other new publications of particular interest include The Secrets of the Wild Woods, a new Tonke Dragt in English; Tonio,under the international author name Adri van der Heijden; Fortunate Slaves, Tom Lanoye’s first novel to appear in English translation; and June, Gerbrand Bakker’s third novel in English.

With Esther Gerritsen’s Craving and Anna-Gine Goemans’s Gliding Flight, January 2015 saw the launch of a major new publisher of Dutch literature in translation, World Editions, an imprint of De Geus. Many more books are in production, so it’ll be exciting to see how these early editions take off.

Meanwhile, in America, translator Laura Watkinson has won her third prestigious Batchelder Award for Mikis and the Donkey, her second with Bibi Dumon Tak and Philip Hopman. Watkinson has now won three of the last four awards, and rumour has it that U.S. bookmakers have stopped taking bets on her winning another in 2016.

It may not end up matching the staggering success of The Dinner, but the early signs have certainly been favourable for Herman Koch’s Summer House with Swimming Pool, which has just come out in the UK. Pushkin Press continues its series of children’s classics with a new translation of Annie M.G. Schmidt’s much-loved Minoes, under the title The Cat Who Came In off the Roof and with a gorgeous retro look. Other highlights of the last few months include novels by Erwin Mortier and Willem Jan Otten and graphic novels by Willy Linthout and Jan Cleijne.

It’s always exciting to see which Dutch & Flemish bestsellers get picked up abroad, and two of the biggest literary hits of recent years, Congo and Bonita Avenue, will appear in English in the next couple of weeks. In America, Aline Sax’s The War within these Walls won the Jewish Book Award and a Mildred L. Batchelder Honor Award. Seagull Books have released a collection of Cees Nooteboom’s poetry and there are new novels by Dimitri Verhulst, Kader Abdolah and Otto de Kat.

New Dutch Books in English

 

So far in 2013 we’ve seen the publication of Adriaan van Dis’s Betrayal, Arnon Grunberg’s Tirza and Typex’s Rembrandt. Bestselling thriller author Simone van der Vlugt has a new book out in English and volume one of Lucebert’s collected poems has appeared. There are also a couple of landmark publications scheduled for the next month or so: in London Pushkin Press will be publishing the first Dutch book in their new list of international children’s classics – Tonke Dragt’s The Letter for the King (winner of the “Griffel der Griffels”, the prize for the best Dutch children’s book ever); and in New York Archipelago will be publishing Even Now, a major new collection of the poetry of Hugo Claus.

Dutch literature from the twenty-first and nineteenth centuries has been attracting attention this year with the longlisting of Tommy Wieringa’s The Death of Murat Idrissi for the prestigious Man Booker International Prize 2019 and the publication in New York of a new translation of Multatuli’s anti-colonial classic, Max Havelaar, now with an introduction by the Indonesian author Pramoedya Ananta Toer. Meanwhile the interest in modern classics continues with the publication of Gerard Reve’s Childhood: Two Novellas and Jan Terlouw’s Winter in Wartime, both by Pushkin in London.
